Nintendo Interacts With Their (Former) Couch-Sitting Players

The days when the only exercise of playing video games stretched to – stretching your thumbs and punching a controller – was out punned when Nintendo released the Wii. Jumping up and down in funny ways not only gave the game-aholic an (unintentional) excuse to move, it also enhanced the ecstasy of playing.

So as Nintendo now reaches out of the living room and into real sport arenas, things are getting even more interesting. At PGA tournaments and Mayor League Baseball training camps they’re gonna involve and interact with their audience (well anyone bringing their DS). IDC analyst Billy Pidgeon said moving the DS into stadiums and arenas helps Nintendo "integrate into users' lives as much as possible. Every place where they can convince users to carry them is a win for them."

It is also building on its "Nintendo Fan Network," which already began at the Seattle Mariners' Safeco Field. There, DS users could download software that allows them to get stats and player info, watch extra videos, order food and drinks and interact with each other during games. It’s only going to be in Seattle for the entire 2008. That said, Mark Franklin, Nintendo of America's director-public relations, did promise "additional surprises" for Nintendo Fan Network users there.
