This is picked up and hastily translated from the Swedish newspaper; “Today’s Industry”. It’s about a different approach to lunch a computer game and how to make money on it, without take charge of it.
This summer Swedish game company, Dice releases their latest version of the Battlefield series, which has been a huge success. But the owner Electronic Arts have decided for something new. Battlefield Heroes is going to be free.
Digital Illusions, Dice have had vast success with their Battlefield succession. The latest edition is due to this summer, but it will be a lot of changes.

First of all, the game is going to be free of charge. Electronic Arts, who bought Dice in 2006, wants to investigate the possibilities to make money in sponsored ads and so called “micro charges”. It’s free to download the game, but while actually playing you’re going to be able to buy a variety of small things that will change the characters in the game.
According to BBC, Electronics Art tried a similar attempt with ads- and micro charges tests in South Korea where a version of football game FIFA is financed in the same way. The revenue of the game is about € 0,8 million a month.
Another new thing for Battlefield Heroes is the graphic. Previous Battlefield-games have struggled for closest realism possible, while “Heroes” stretch for cartoon style. Plus the demands on the computer will be immensely smaller. And to lure more players it’s going to be a lot easier than its prequels.
It’s gonna be interesting to see how it goes. Fun when companies try!
